THANKING A SPEAKER

Your role as Toastmaster of a meeting also includes thanking a speaker when he or she has finished.

As the speaker finishes, you should lead the audience's applause as you return to the lecturn. Then express appreciation to the speaker on behalf of the audience. If you wish, you may comment on some aspect of the presentation or its appropriateness. For example, you could state, "Last week two more teenagers in our town were killed  in car crashes. Thank you, Linh, for telling us what we can do to prevent these tragic deaths."

Keep your acknowledgement brief and be pleasant, gracious and sincere, even if you don't agree with the speaker's viewpoint. Avoid offering your own opinions or making a speech of your own. Be courteous and stay focused on the speaker.
